Flooding in Craigleith

After the heavy rains in the first part of October, there was some flooding in Belford Gardens in Craigleith. Despite regular
cleaning, the gullies in this area often flood and the council has recorded them as ‘sensitive’ gullies so that they are cleaned twice a year rather than the normal once.

At the last clean and inspection on 13th October one of the three drains was found to be full of plaster/building grout materials, which were removed. Following further heavy rain in late October I asked council staff to check how well the gullies were working. One of them was found still to only be able to cope with a small volume of water before it started to
back-up, due to a partial blockage at the outlet pipe. All three gullies were therefore jetted with highpressure water and an investigation of the condition of the main sewer was carried out.

You may have noticed that some of the water was bright green - this is the officers putting dye in the drain to trace exactly where the water is going.

As a result of all this work it has been agreed that the gully will be dug up and fully repaired. This work should be done  before the end of the year, and that should hopefully resolve the problem.

In the meantime, if flooding occurs again anywhere in the ward please either let me know or contact Stuart Smith of the Council’s gully team on 458 8048.
